ABOUT THE ARTISTS
The Orfeo Trio was formed in 2012 in Wichita, Kansas where they began their career as the official Piano Trio of the Wichita State University College of Fine Arts, School of Music. The three members of the Orfeo Trio are active performers with considerable chamber music experience. Cellist Leonid Shukaev is a founding member of the St. Petersburg String Quartet, the Quartet-in-Residence at Wichita State University. Their rise to fame has included a Grammy nomination, "Best Record" honors in both Stereo Review and Gramophone, an opening night performance at Mostly Mozart at Lincoln Center, a five-year residency at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and hundreds of concerts on many of North America, Europe and Asia's most prestigious series and festivals. Violinist Evgeny Zvonnikov joined the St. Petersburg String Quartet in 2010 and was recently named associate concertmaster of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. Pianist Julie Bees has performed chamber music throughout her career, including performances with the Vermeer Quartet and the St. Petersburg String Quartet, as well as in lieder recitals and with various instrumental ensembles at summer festivals. Before coming to the United States, Leonid Shukaev taught cello for several years at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and St. Petersburg College of Music, and played in the Leningrad Philharmonic. In the U.S., he has taught at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and is presently on the faculty of Wichita State University. Evgeny Zvonnikov has extensive experience performing as soloist as well as in ensembles, not only in classical repertoire but also in contemporary and tango. Evgeny was educated in St. Petersburg, and now teaches violin at Wichita State University. Pianist Julie Bees is an active recitalist in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and has appeared as soloist with orchestras in Hong Kong, Dallas, New York, Santa Barbara, Augusta, and Interlochen. She joined the piano faculty of Wichita State University in 1986. She chairs the Konrad Wolff-Ilse Bing Endowed Chamber Music Award Committee, which supports scholarships for gifted young musicians with a commitment to chamber music and an annual chamber music competition held at Wichita State University
