The Women’s Open Championship was reaching a climax with the two top seeded players Egle Adomelyte and Emma Vickers contesting the final. The surprise of this event was the outstanding performances shown by Sue West from the Bournemouth Sports club who reached the semi-final. Unseeded in the competition Sue won her group then achieved brilliant results over Cherith Graham in five tough sets to then go one better and remove yesterday’s Band 1 winner Annabelle Morle (who had previously beaten Haylee Potts in the 1st round) to reach the last eight stage. The other semi finalist Jordyn Layfield was also in devastating form in getting past Sarah Horsnell and a close encounter of the fifth kind over 4th seed Lisa Radford.

Emma Vickers pathway to the final saw her enjoy strong performances over Helen Rutherford, Hang Li (who had earlier beaten Melissa Wright in five tight ends) and then after surviving a first set loss against last four opponent Jordyn Layfield, came through in good style to win the next three sets to reach the final.

Egle Adomeylte (a regular Grand Prix winner) after a comfortable first round win against Natasha Walsh was made to work very hard against Ireland’s Susan Nealon in a topsy turvy full distance match coming through 11-9 in the last set to meet Sue West in the other semi final. Egle lost the opening set to Sue having difficulty with her long pimpled style of play, but soon got to grips with the situation to close out the next three sets fairly comfortably.
