hyperbole มีความหมายแบบเดียวกับ overstatement hyper, over หมายถึงสูง มากเกิน statement คือคำพูด สรุปก็คือ พูดเกินจริงแต่เป็นการพูดเกินจริงเพื่อเน้นความรู้สึกของผู้พูด ลองดูบทกลอน I wandered lonely as a cloud ของ William Wordsworth เป็นกวีอังกฤษชื่อดังสมัยศตวรรษที่ 19 ซึ่งเป็นเวลาที่เรียกว่า romantic period The romantic period or romanticism emphasizes imagination, nature, supernatural power, emotion and a revolt against reason. revolt (กบฏ) ยุคโรแมนติกหรือลัทธิโรแมนติกเน้นจินตนาการ ธรรมชาติ สิ่งลี้ลับ อารมณ์และการปฏิเสธเหตุผล ลองมาดูงานชิ้นเอกของเขากัน I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze........ กวีเดินอย่างเหงาๆ (wander เดินเรื่อยเปื่อย) เหมือนก้อนเมฆที่ float over vales and hills ลอยเหนือหุบเขา และเขาก็เห็นดอกดัฟโฟดิลเป็นกลุ่มอยู่ใกล้ๆทะเลสาบ lake ตอนที่เขาเดินอยู่มีสายลมพัดอ่อนๆ (breeze) ทำให้ดอกไม้ไหวไปตามสายลม (flutter สะบัด กระพือ) Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance........
เขาก็เปรียบดอกไม้เหมือนกับดวงดาวที่ส่องแสงระยิบระยับ (twinkle) อยู่บนทางช้างเผือก (the milky way) และทีนี้ก็มาถึง hyperbole หรือ overstatement แล้ว ตรงที่เขาบอกว่า The daffodils stretched in never-ending line. ดอกไม้มันยาวเหยียดเป็นเส้นที่ไร้จุดจบ I saw ten thousand at a glance. มองแว่บนึงเห็นเป็นหมื่นดอก (glance-การชำเลืองมอง)
A hyperbole or an overstatement is a use of an exaggeration to emphasize the feeling เรียกเป็นภาษาไทยว่า อธิพจน์ แถมในกลอนนี้ยังมี personification คือการทำให้สิ่งไม่มีชีวิตมีลักษณะคล้ายมนุษย์ อย่างในกลอนนี้ก็มีการทำให้ดัฟโฟดิลเต้นได้เหมือนคนด้วย
